Beginning the Search for Your Dream Home in Scottsdale
Real estate MLS listings give you minimal information to start with
Most people looking for homes in Scottsdale and the metro Phoenix area begin by looking at home listings online, in magazines and newspapers hoping to find the perfect one – a property that will feel like “home” when you first set foot in it. This is a daunting task to say the least.
Scottsdale real estate listings, or Multiple Listing Service (MLS) in realtor jargon, give the absolute minimum information for you to start with – definitely not enough for you to determine if the home is the right one for you and your family. Home magazines and newspaper ads are the same as are most home tours.
Minimal information through these avenues means relying on a Scottsdale real estate agent to weed through the listings and guide you to homes that will meet your needs and desires that much more important.
Make it easy for both of you – write down the criteria you’re looking for in a home.
Now is the time to take pen and paper and sit down with your family and make a list of what you’re looking for in a home.
Think of everything that matters about your new home. Write down all your wants needs including the number of bed and bathrooms. Of course, there is much more to consider than that.
First is location. Do you want your new Scottsdale dream home to be near schools, shopping, work and/or places of worship? Do you want privacy or will you be happier near a major highway? How close should your neighbors be? Does having a view matter to you? If it does, do you prefer viewing lights of the city or wildlife?
Then there’s the property. Do you want a small yard for easy care or a large space for gardening and landscaping? Do you need room for dogs to run or do you have a horse that requires some pasture?
What about the house itself? Consider who will share your home and your lifestyle. Any special room required? Do you require an office, an exercise room, a separate TV room for kids, a crafts room or maybe an attached greenhouse?
Does the furniture you have require a spacious room? Do you need open spaces for entertaining, or are you more comfortable with a small and cozy living area? Do you want everything on one level or do you desire a basement or second story? Will you need an attic for storage? Do you need a garage? If so, does it need to have room for a work bench or separate shop area?
List everything that matters to you and your family!
But finding a home for sale in Scottsdale that meets all your criteria is a rare occurrence so you need to choose your priorities.
Review your list and consider everything – you should be able to hand your Scottsdale real estate agent two lists – one with your “must-haves” and the other a “wish list” of amenities that would be nice to have but are not absolutely necessary.
You will save yourself and your Scottsdale real estate agent hours, perhaps days, in your search for a home by merely eliminating homes for sale that don’t meet the “must haves” on your list. With both lists in hand, your agent may be able to take you straight to the home of your dreams.
